How IPL for Acne Works

Limelight IPL delivers intense pulses of light energy into the deep layers of the skin, causing the blood vessels and collagen below the epidermis to constrict, reducing redness and wrinkles. When the pulses touch the skin, the energy is absorbed by pigment cells and turns into heat. This heat beneath the surface of the skin can destroy acne, freckles, hair follicles, and the bacteria that may be causing the acne.

The treatment may cause a slight tingling sensation when the light pulses on the skin. Cooling gel is applied to provide comfort. The entire process is non-invasive and produces excellent, consistent results. Limelight IPL photo-facial is only recommended for lighter skin types and non-tanned skin. When dealing with acne, IPL photofacials treatments generally utilize three filters or wavelengths: 420 nm or blue light, 560 nm of yellow light, and 590 nm of red light. These three filters provide their own properties:

420 nm (blue light): Destroying certain acne bacteria
560 nm (yellow light): Tending swollen acne lesions
590 nm (red light): Paralyzing overactive oil glands in the skin

Procedure details

Before the treatment begins we will clean and lubricate your skin, and you will wear protective goggles on your eyes. The device wavelengths will be set based on the treatment objectives. A numbing cream may be applied as needed.

The handheld IPL device will go right on your skin, and will be repeatedly passed over the treatment area.

Duration

LimeLight is a quick procedure done in under 30 minutes. Large treatment areas could take longer.

Sensation

While most people are fine with the light pulses, the treatment could sting a little. It might feel like someone is snapping a rubber band on you.

Recovery
